Lyrics

When I have time I’ll write you a poem
When I have time I’ll visit the sea
When I have time I’ll give back to others
All the kindness they’ve given to me

After I go through the drawers in the kitchen
After I sweep off the dust from the fan
After I’ve spent all my time keeping busy
Then I’ll talk for a while, if I can

Once the kids have grown up I’ll be happy
Once the dogs settle down I’ll be fine
Once I save just a little more money
Then I’ll do all the things I desire

But isn’t this my life that I’m living?
I am who I am, nothing more
It’s time to get on with living
Not look back or fear what’s in store
What am I waiting for?

When I have time I’ll play the piano
When I have time I’ll sing from the heart
When I have time I’ll give back to others
All the kindness they’ve shown from the start

After I make a big win in the lotto
After I come to the fork in the road
After I take a good look in the mirror
Maybe I’ll figure out which way to go

Once I’ve learned a bit more about Gaza
Once I know more about the Ukraine
Once I’ve spent all my time learning history
Will I finally have something to say?

But isn’t this my life that I’m living?
I am who I am, nothing more
And as time marches on to the end of the year
Am I wiser than I was before?
What am I waiting for?

Now is the time to write you a poem
Now is the time to visit the sea
Now is the time I’ll give back to others
All the kindness you’ve given to me

I acknowledge the Ngunnawal and Ngambri peoples, the Traditional Custodians of the land on which I live and work in Canberra. I pay my respects to Elders past and present, and recognise that sovereignty was never ceded and that this land always was, and always will be, Aboriginal land.
